Local High
Schools
Sports Medicine Specialists is very familiar with the proud sporting traditions of the high schools in Davis County. We also understand what it takes to keep high school athletes healthy and on the “field” without compromising their overall health.
There are many characteristics of high school athletes that make these young people an exciting challenge to care for. These athletes have developing bodies and minds, are exposed to more and more practice and game time than ever before, are constantly bombarded by influences both good and bad during their sporting “careers,” and essentially are setting the groundwork for their entire futures during these formative years.
As physicians and former high school athletes ourselves, we know that there are many components to success in sports:
- physical skills & proper technique
- good health and fitness
- the right mental attitude
- a mix of positive character traits
As sports medicine doctors we obviously treat sports injuries, but we also aim to prevent injuries and promote physical activity in all forms. We have a particular interest in helping your child develop his or her athletic abilities, because we firmly believe that sports are an important part of personal development and preparation for adulthood.
"We believe . . . that our games are indispensable in helping to complete the education of a [young person]. They create character. They foster courage, honesty, and leadership. But most of all, an unassailable spirit of loyalty, comradeship, and mutual responsibility." - Chariots of Fire
We serve local high school athletes in five ways:
1) Pre-participation physicals
The Utah High School Athletics Association (UHSAA) requires that a “health examination must be performed and the
Preparticipation Physical Evaluation must be completed before any student may participate in athletic activities sponsored by this Association.”
We offer discounted physicals on certain dates. We will post the dates and times of these physicals on the home page of this website as soon as that information is available. We are currently in the process of scheduling times for these physicals in conjunction with your school’s athletic trainer. Check back often for updates!
The charge for a physical will be $20. Sports Medicine Specialists will donate half of that ($10) back to your child’s school sports medicine or athletic department. The rest of the money is used to pay athletic trainers and other support staff who assist in this important task.
Any athlete who needs a physical outside of the designated dates and times will be welcome at Sports Medicine Specialists but will be charged a routine office visit (submitted to your insurance plan in the usual manner).
2) Open Access to our clinic through the Athlete Hotline
This service will allow in-season athletes to get prompt, comprehensive medical care for a rapid assessment, treatment, and return-to-play decision. The Athlete Hotline is a phone number given only to your school’s athletic
trainer and physical therapists who can call for immediate access to our physicians. Same day or next day evaluation can be initiated with on-site x-ray and other diagnostic tools as well as multiple treatment options to enhance speedy, safe recovery and return-to-play.
We intend to be a resource to prevent a misdiagnosis or any delay in returning to your sport. Your athletic trainers and physical therapists know they can get you in to see us for any medical issue, be it a fracture, a sprain or tear, a breathing problem, infections, or other reasons.
To use this resource, ask your athletic trainer to contact Sports Medicine Specialists on the Athlete Hotline. The benefit of going this route is that after we see you, initiate a treatment plan, and map your return-to-play, we can contact your athletic trainer or therapist so there is no confusion as to our recommendation. They can also be your advocate in therapy and with your coaches.
If you cannot contact your athletic trainer or physical therapist, call our main line at (801) 298-2495 and explain your situation. We will make every effort give you a same- or next-day appointment and offer the same comprehensive service as if you’d come through the Athlete Hotline.
3) Athlete Education
We can provide important education and training to young athletes about such topics as the following:
i. Physical conditioning and fitness—speed, strength, endurance
ii. Nutrition—weight gain or loss, supplements, fluid management
iii. Mental preparation—stress management, slumps, positive imagery, etc
iv. General health-related topics for teens—acne, puberty, infections
v. Common sports injury prevention
vi. Character—a tough one to teach, but we can try, right? Sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, integrity.
4) Bumps & Bruises Clinic
During football season, we offer a Saturday morning clinic to assess your injuries and initiate a prompt treatment plan in coordination with your school’s athletic trainer and/or physical therapist. Experience has taught us the sooner an injury is evaluated and treatment begun, the faster the recovery and the less sports time missed.
5) Event Coverage
We currently have arranged to assist in event coverage for Woods Cross and Bountiful High Schools. We obviously can only be in one place at a time, but as we partner with other medical providers, we hope to expand our event coverage to provide on-site medical services at high-risk games and events throughout Davis County.
Utah Jazz
Team physician Lyle B. Mason, M.D. sees Jazz players and personnel at Sports Medicine Specialists. Dr. Richards and Betteridge also assist Dr. Mason in pre-event physicals and event coverage of the Rocky Mountain Review.
