What is Sports Medicine?
Sports Medicine is a specialty field of medicine in which medical
doctors focus on the care of musculoskeletal,
medical, nutritional, and psychosocial problems in active individuals.
Sports Medicine doctors undergo extensive training in musculoskeletal
medicine and in medical issues specific to active people, and as
a result are better equipped than their primary care counterparts
in the management of these problems. In addition, while sports orthopedic
surgeons primarily focus on the operative treatment of musculoskeletal
injuries, Sports Medicine Specialists emphasize
non-surgical, medical treatment of these injuries.
Who can benefit from Sports Medicine?
Some people think Sports Medicine is only for young people on formal sports teams. That is simply not true. Sports Medicine physicians are trained to treat "athletes" of all ages and abilities. Basically, anyone who is physically active or who wants to become physically active can benefit from the unique skills of a Sports Medicine physician.
What does a Sports Medicine physician do?
A good Sports Medicine physician
will work in conjunction with, not in replacement of, your primary care
physician, an orthopedist when necessary, and other medical professionals
to maximize your care.
This means you don't have to give up your "regular" doctor
when you seek care from a Sports Medicine physician. In fact, in most
instances given your permission, the Sports Medicine doctor will inform
your other physician to coordinate best care and get everyone, including
you, "on the same
page."
Sports Medicine physicians are not physical therapists or athletic trainers, although, as leaders of a sports medicine team, they work closely with these and other health care providers to enhance healing, maximize physical function, and minimize disability or time away from physical activity.
In addition to treating injuries or medical problems, Sports Medicine
physicians emphasize and promote lifelong fitness,
wellness, and health.
